Narrow Gauge Railway

Narrow Gauge Railways were a simple and cheap method of supplying transport needs in difficult terrain. In Ireland, Wales and England there were fine examples of Railway, all with varying track widths. The best known of these is the Snowdon Railway which is still operating to this day.

The Snowdon railway set the pace for various mountain railways throughout the world, especially as there was an accident on the very first journey. This accident prompted alterations to the track which other companies copied.

Tin, coal, gold and silver mines all had their own narrow gauge railway, which normally terminated at a junction with the standard railways where load could be transfered.

Locomotives varied according to required performance and through out the 1800's worked very hard indeed. Some of these locomotives are on view in various museums throughout the country.

The modeller is geeted with the oportunity to build a loco, on a standard mass produced chassis, which loosely represents one of the old locos. Detail is taken from photographs or if fortunate, from drawings. The scale for 0-16.5mm locos is large enough for the oldest eyes to work on without too much strain. The layout is not excessive in size unless by design, and the overall effect is a compact layout with pleanty of features, most of which are scratch built.

So why not give it a try? Build an O gauge loco body and fit it to a OO chassis and you have a narrow gauge 0-16.5mm locomotive running on standard ho/oo track!
